Antonio Gioacchino Spagnolo, M.D.

Dr. Spagnolo is the director of the Institute of Bioethics, School of Medicine at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart located in Rome, Italy, and a member of the executive committee of the Center for Bioethics at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart located in Milan, Italy.  He is a full professor of bioethics at the Agostino Gemelli School of Medicine at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome.  He is an invited professor of clinical bioethics at the International Institute of the Pastoral Theology of Health Care (Camillianum) incorporated with the Pontifical Theological Faculty (Teresianum) in Rome.

Dr. Spagnolo is chairman of the Bioethics Committee at the Azienda Ospedaliere Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo; member of Ethics Committee of the Istituto Dermopatico dell’Immacolata, Rome; and member ex officio of the Ethics Committee of the Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli, Rome. He is corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy for Life and consultant of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers.

Dr. Spagnolo has authored or co-authored of over 200 scientific publications on various topics in biomedical ethics and in particular the ethics of biomedical experimentation and clinical ethics. Among the publications in recent years that he has edited for the publisher McGraw-Hill (Milan) was the Italian edition of the volume of Jonsen-Siegler-Winslade, Clinical Ethics: A Practical Approach to Ethical Decisions in Clinical Medicine (June 2003). He was  co-author of the book Ethics and Justice in Healthcare, the general aspects, methodological and organizational issue (May 2004).
